Caritas Spirit

In class today, I asked my students to define what the Caritas Spirit means to each of them. After hearing from a few students what they had written in their journals, I knew we needed to share their thoughts with everyone. So, for homework, each of my wonderfully thoughtful students will add their comments to this blog post, explaining what Caritas Spirit means to them.

Enjoy!

  1. Caritas spirit is only found in Nature with others, and is the ability to make new friend with people you just met and work together with them. It is also a type of lifestyle. The lifestyle is living a life full of happiness and love for all things. Everyone is joyful and unique. You can show this by also trying to be upbeat and happy and by encouraging you classmates to live caritas stlye by constantl reminding them about the wonderful time you had there. And most of all remind youself by keeping a momento close to remind you to live Caritas stle. And that is wahat the spirit of Caritas means to me,

  2. Caritas spirit to me means the love we give to our classmates, other schools, friends, family, acquaintances, and the Earth. When I experience Caritas spirit I feel accepted and a strong connections to myself, others, and God. Working together with other people you usually don't talk to or interact with is a prime example of Caritas spirit!

  3. Caritas spirit means trying to meet new people, getting to know your class better, and seeing a different side of your classmates. You can show you know what it means by eating lunch with people you don't usually sit with. I think that our class did a good job showing Caritas spirit because we really tried to branch out to St. Catherine's. We are now friends and keep in touch. Without Caritas spirit, we probably would'nt have met them.

  4. Being in the Caritas Spirit means to get to know people you wouldn't normally hang out with and try to make friends with them. The Caritas Spirit also means taking risks. You can take a risk by (for example) doing an activity that you wouldn't do right away. I can love the Caritas Spirit by doing things Caritas Style, or sitting with different people when you get the chance or making groups with people who don't normally do things together. I can live the Caritas Spirit outside the school by making friends on sports teams or joining community clubs to meet people and get out of your comfort zone.

  5. Caritas means that we are all connected in one way. In the end we will need each other. I met so many new people with things in common with me and they also taught me new things about myself too. Caritas brings out the best in people and showed us that we all have a unique quality. It also showed us that we can do anything we want to do, as long we try. Caritas can change your life.

  6. For me, the Caritas Spirit is not just making new friends. It's keeping the new friends you make but holding on to the old as well. Sometimes kids say, "They're in my class--I know these people." But if you don't know their favorite flavor of ice cream or at least their favorite color, then you don't know them that well.
Caritas Spirit is also accepting people and not judging physical attributes. Caritas Spirit is taking a risk--whether it is overcoming a fear, boldly introducing yourself though you are quaking inside, or trying something new, something you never thought you'd enjoy.
And that's what the Caritas Spirit means to me.

  8. Imagine walking up to a person who you don't even know and asking him/her what there name is. To me, that is Caritas style. Saying hello and talking to someone can create friendships and renew old ones. Sitting next to people, reaching out, just being yourself, is what Caritas is all about.

  9. Caritas Spirit means to live in the moment and live your life the way you want to live it and dont need to worry about who will judge you. One way you can live caritas spirit is FUZZIES!!!!! When I get fuzzies it makes me feel soo special! That means people like what I'm saying and that they have stuff in common with me!

  10. Caritas spirit is when you branch out, respect others, and try new things or do something you have already done in a way that you’re not familiar with along with many other things that you should try to do every day. Some ways to show Caritas spirit at school are by sitting next to someone you wouldn’t normally sit with, listening to a friend who needs someone to talk to, or by including someone even if you wouldn’t normally hang out with that person. Although some people may make it out to be a hard thing to do, I find living out your day through the Caritas Spirit very easy after some practice. If you start by just striking up a conversation at the beginning of the day, at snack, and or at lunch, you have already started living the Caritas Spirit. Even though not everyone knows its name, I think everybody should live out the Caritas Spirit.

  11. "Caritas Spirit," in general means meeting new people and hanging out with people that you wouldn't usually hang out with. You show you know what it means by being around people that you wouldn't necessarily be around, maybe someone that you want to know better.I can, for the rest of the year, start making new friends and start reuniting with new ones. The way the entire class can live Caritas Spirit like is by doing serendipities and during group projects, pair up with people from the opposite gender, for the most some of the girls will have to partner up with the same gender but people that they don't know well. This is what Caritas Style is, how you can show it, how I can show it, and how the entire class or neighborhood can live it.

  12. "Caritas Spirit" is meeting new friends, including them, and respecting them in everything you do. I can show this by talking to others in our class that I might not often talk to. I can also sit with people at lunch that I don't normally sit next to. I can probably get to know them better and have a great conversation with them! That is what "Caritas Spirit means to me!"

  13. Caritas Spirit, to me, is showing a positive attitude about everything and trying new things. You can show what it means by hanging out with people you don't normally talk to and by looking at the good side of things even when there is a bad side. One thing I can do to keep the spirit alive for myself is to try new thing and not stick to the same routine. One thing I can do to keep the spirit alive in my class is by encouraging them to do these things.

  14. The "Caritas Spirit" is taking a step outside your comfort zone. Everyone does this in a different way. It can be meeting new people, kissing a bannana slug, going on a solo night hike, or maybe even just going on a long hike with your group during the day. Depending on who you are, and what you like or don't like to do, makes your comfort zone different. I think that taking a risk is the whole meaning of Caritas, and that our class definitely did this while we were there, and will hopefully continue doing so even though our location is different.

  15. Filling the air with love is what Caritas means to me. Branching out to new people maybe from your class, or other schools may be filling the air with love. I believe when I say Caritas means filling the air with love, it doesn't just mean new friendships, but also it means we are one group that supports one another. When I say supporting I mean being there when people are hurt, sad, mad, or just need someone to lean on. Please help me fill the air with love, "Caritas style!" And that is what CAritas means to me!

  16. Caritas Spirit, for me, is branching out of your comfort zone and exploring new opporunities. It's about meeting new people or getting to know the people you already do. Caritas Spirit should become something everyone has.
We can continue Caritas Spirit by eating lunch with classmates that we don't usually eat with. Each one of us should also try something that's out of our comfort zone, even if it scares us to pieces. That's what Caritas Spirit means to me.

  17. For me the Caritas Spirit is just the great experience Caritas provides. I got to know a lot of my classmates better even though I have known them for seven years. I have grown closer to my friends in my class. I also made new friends from the other school.
Caritas Spirit is accepting people. Taking a risk even though you are afraid. Caritas Spirit can be found in nature, in others, and in yourself. That is what Caritas Spirit is to me.

  18. I think Caritas Spirit is being connected to yourSelf, Others, Nature, and God. The capital letters spell out the acronym we used: SONG. I think the Caritas Spirit means staying connected with those even after Caritas. We can be connected to ourself by spending time alone and thinking about our good qualities or learning more about ourselves. We can be connected to others by including everyone and listening to people. We can be connected to nature by respecting it and learning more about it. We can connect with God through all of the other things: we can see God in ourselves, in others, and in nature.

Caritas spirit is about meeting new people and hanging out with people from your own class that you don't know very well. It is also about taking risks, for example, you could sit next to someone new or trying different things to join every club. Caritas spirit is connecting with self, others, nature and God. Caritas spirit is something that should exist in everyone.

  21. For me the Caritas Spirit means to take a risk, whether it's kissing a banana slug or sitting next to someone you normally wouldn't hang out with and getting to know them a little better. Caritas Sprit is also living in the moment, connecting with nature and God, enjoying the time you have, the life you have, and the friends you will always keep.

  22. I think Caritas spirit is being one with nature. Caritas is also the Caritas style. It teaches us to not constantly worry about who we are interacting with. I also believe that the Caritas spirit teaches us that we are all equal.

  23. The Caritas Spirit is taking a risk and participating in different activities such as meeting new people, go on a night hike, being surrounded by the beauty of nature, and etc. I wouldn't know anything about branching out to other people because in school we are with people who've we've been with for nearly eight or nine years. I was thankful to have that opportunity to get outside, enjoy nature, make new friends, find out what the true meaning of life is, and renew friendships with other classmates.

  24. Caritas spirit to me means branching out, showing your true colors and being yourself. You can be daring by sitting next to some one new or kissing a banana slug. Ways to embrace the Caritas spirit is to accept one another and open up to God, nature, others, and yourself.

  25. The Caritas Spirit to me is about gaining confidence in yourself. The more activities I tried, the more people I met, the more confident I became in myself. To keep this spirit alive, I think it's important to live life to the fullest and to not pass up any opportunity that comes your way.

  26. Caritas Spirit to me means, people caring for others and their surroundings. Some ways I show this is by caring for other people when they are sad or just need a friend or you could go Caritas Style and intermingle with people you normally don't intermingle with. One way you can care for your surroundings is keep it clean, if you see trash you can pick it up.

  27. The Caritas Spirit means to me all the love and fun we all shared at Caritas and all the fun games we played all the very meaningful serendipities we had. When I think of Caritas I think long hikes with people you have grown close to and being blindfolded and walked along a trail while someone is guiding you, who you chose Caritas style. What I told my family when I came home, "I want to go back immediately".

  30. Caritas Spirit means to me being lively and ready for the challenges ahead. Ways I show it is being energetic and boosting the morale of my classmates. One way I can keep the spirit alive is having an upbeat attitude and ready to learn. One way for the class is to encourage my classmates to do the same.

  31. Revised comment

I had a great time at Caritas. I think that the basic message all the Caritas staff were trying to send was the meaning of the Caritas sprit. What I picked up from our conversations was that Caritas spirit is living together in harmony with the people around us no matter if we know them or not. We should be able to trust the people that surround us and feel support from other in our decisions in life. I met a lot of new friends and built strong friendships with the counselors and I feel like a new person.

  32. Caritas Spirit means discovering new friends. I arrived at Caritas with many friends from CTK. Very quickly, the naturalists and staff introduced us to many new friends from St. Catherine's. I learned a lot about my new friends, as well as about my long-time friends. For me, Caritas Spirit will always be about the spirit of friendship.

  33. Love, spirit, and faith are always finging some way to get to you, in one form or another. These three things will always be connecting people together and showing the love in our hearts. No matter what, we will always be connected together ike the roots of a tree. thay are always intertwining with eachother, and that is what we should be doing. getting to know what other people are like, and not just hanging out with your friends. I know this is what Caritas Spirit means to me.

  34. Caritas Spirit means meeting new friends and enjoying life to the absolute fullest. Making new friends from St. Catherins and renewing friendships from my classmates allowed me to see new life and new experiences in everyday life which becomes repetitive. These friendships allow me to enjoy life and allow myself to express myself without being judged by others. Making my life more fun and less annoying and less difficult is an easy way to make me happy.

  35. Caritas spirit is taking a risk, meeting new people, enjoying nature, while still having a good time. Taking a risk is stepping outside of your comfort zone and doing things you wouldn't normally do. Some examples are the night hike, the trust fall, and even kissing a banana slug. This ties in with meeting new people. Sometimes it's hard to branch out and meet new people or simply hanging out with a classmate instead of your friends, or the people you feel comfortable with. Enjoying nature is basically leaving the couch for once and playing outside and getting muddy. Having a good time while doing all of these is what you experience at caritas.
